57. Nissin Chow Mein Chicken Flavor

IMG_5621

Whenever I hear the words – chow mein I get hungry. For me it is one of those not-so-unhealthy snacks. And nothing beats the chow mein from a tiny shack in your local market because the greasier, the better!

Never reviewed instant noodles packaged in a tray. Also looks like they have to be cooked only in a microwave. Damn. I prefer the stove over any other method. But since this is the only pack I have, I’m just going to follow the instructions.

Cooking directions as on the wrapping –

  1. Open lid to dotted line. Remove savory sauce packet.
  2. Add room temperature water to fill line.
  3. Cook for 5 minutes in a microwave (1000W) on high. Let stand for 1 minute.
  4. Do not drain. Some water remaining in the container after cooking is desirable. Do not reuse the container.

A slightly broader and flatter wheat noodle block here. The colorful veggie mix consists of dried cabbage flakes, carrot chunks and what looks like chicken chunks (or it soy chunks?).

IMG_5646

The sauce not only looks heavenly (with a layer of oil at the top) but even smells heaven like. Its got a faint peanutty aroma along with a hint of soy sauce, ginger and onion. Perfect!

IMG_5656

This plate looks much better than what I was expecting! Even the chow mein aroma is on point!

IMG_5690

The plentiful broad noodles give an authentic “chow mein” vibe and cooking in the microwave is not such a bad thing after all 😛

IMG_5708

The sauce does its magic and this tastes like authentic street style chow mein! These noodles are even greasy! However i couldn’t taste any chicken in there and that’s where it loses some points. And were those the “chicken” chunks in there?? Other veggies hydrated decently well though.

Anyways, it is hard to stop eating them! Someone send me more of these!! Please!

Pro tip – add a dash of chilli sauce or chilli oil or make a quick chicken/veg chilli stir fry and you are sorted. Really, trust me on this!

54. Nissin Top Ramen – Soy Sauce Flavor

IMG_3973

This soy sauce flavor was previously known as “oriental flavor” and the packaging was pretty similar to this one. And what is oriental flavor anyways?

IMG_3977

Cooking directions –

  1. Boil 2 cups of water in a saucepan. Add noodles, breaking up if desired. Cook for 3 minutes or until noodles are tender, stirring occasionally.
  2. Remove from heat. Stir in seasonings from flavor packet. To lower sodium, use less seasoning.

Since the exact quantity of water wasn’t mentioned, I used about 220ml of water hoping and praying this much would be enough for this pack.

IMG_4001

A standard sized wheat noodle block although the texture of these noodles however does look different.

The seasoning sure has an interesting aroma and color. Smells oniony with a hint of spiciness and I can see a few green flakes which I am guessing is leek.

IMG_4017

Simple looking noodles are my favorite.

The noodles were way too salty but OM the G the texture of these noodles is brilliant! So 220 ml of water is perfect as the noodles came out to be slightly firmer with a great chew to them. And this is just the way I like them.

However, the saltiness if brutal and I couldn’t taste any other flavor honestly.

Mushrooms are my safest bet for anything “oriental flavor” so I sautéed some shrooms in butter and pepper (well I should have avoided butter since that made the mushrooms salty but little did I know that the broth would be so extremely salty).

Unfortunately I gave up on this plate of noods after about 5-6 bites. This dish gets an additional point only because of the quality of the noodles.

Looking forward to trying other flavors from the same line because bomb noods.
